Euro 2012 Tickets

Alexandre Pato, AC Milan

Milan striker, Alexandre Pato is hoping to recover from a thigh injury in order to play for the first leg of AC Milan’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Arsenal FC on 15 February. The return leg of the Arsenal game will be played in London on 6 March.

Pato is a doubt for the San Siro leg of AC Milan’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Arsenal FC after being laid off for over three weeks.

The 22-year-old Brazilian strained his left thigh after scoring the extra-time winner in his side’s Coppa Italia round of 16 game against Novara Calcio.

Pato scored twice in three group stage matches this season.

The groups in the preliminary round of Euro 2012 are completed.

The format used by the EHF starts out with 16 teams and one of the two purposes of the group play is ‘simply’ to reduce the field down to 12.

Europe has about 10-12 really strong teams, so the weeding out of the more marginal teams does not often create much excitement.

The teams which advance bring with them the points from the games that they have played against each other, this means that every game means a lot even when teams already know they will will and advance.

Euro 2012 Draw – Update

After the Euro 2012 draw for the group stage in Poland and the Ukraine took place – Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal will battle in the first round, Spain clashes with Italy, and England fights France.

Group Stage Draw

Group A: Poland, Czech Republic, Greece, Russia

Favorites: Russia and Poland

Russia will host the 2018 World Cup and has drawn the easiest of the four groups. Premier League duo Andrei Arshavin and Roman Pavlyuchenko will play for Russia. Poland will feature Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny and Borussia Dortmund pair Robert Lewandowski and Jakub Blaszczykowski.

Group B: Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, Germany

Favorites: Germany, Netherlands.

Germany is reportedly the pre-tournament favorite with top players, Mesut Ozil, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose. The Netherlands will feature Dutchman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Cristiano Ronaldo will be vital to Portugal along with Nani and Joao Moutinho. Denmark’s striker Nicklas Bendtner is in top form this season.

Group C: Spain, Ireland, Croatia, Italy

Favorites: Spain, Croatia.

Spain was perfect in qualifying. The reigning World Cup and European championship winners have an advantage. Xavi, Andres Iniesta, David Silva, Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas will feature along with striker David Villa who scored seven goals in qualifying. Croatia’s Luka Modric and Milan Badelj should be formidable.

Group D: Ukraine, France, Sweden, England

Favorites: England, Sweden.

Fabio Capello will bring Wayne Rooney to the European championships despite the striker’s three-game ban. If Samir Nasri and Franck Ribery are fit, France could be a force. Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic is fit. Ibrahimovic helped dispatch England in international friendly match between England and Sweden at Wembley Stadium on November 15, 2011 in London, England. Andriy Shevchenko and Andriy Yarmolenko will play for Ukraine.

Euro Stars Out of London Olympics – Euro 2012 Tickets

Wayne Rooney, England and Manchester United

Euro Stars Out of Olympics

England players who take part in this summer’s Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine will not be selected to play for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics.

Great Britain’s Olympic football team will be denied England’s best players after Stuart Pearce announced that no one involved in Euro 2012 will be considered for selection for the London 2012 Games.

Both Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshere have been among the Englishmen to have expressed an interest in appearing at the Olympics.

Stuart Pearce, who had not initially ruled anyone out, described it as “a sensible football decision”.

Pearce said: “We have had discussions as we come now to notifying the long list of the players who could potentially be selected and it is important to make clear what we have agreed regarding England players who will be at Euro 2012.

“We have agreed that any player who boards the plane to the European Championship in Ukraine and Poland will not be considered for selection to Team GB.

“It’s a sensible football decision when you consider the demands on players, and it now leaves no room for doubt for players and their clubs about next summer and the two major tournaments.”

Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger and Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson have said it would be too much for players to play in both tournaments.

Euro 2012 Update – England

Euro 2012 Update

Everton defender, Baines is a strong contender to be part of head coach Fabio Capello’s squad which travels to Poland and Ukraine, although competition to start is fierce. However, Leighton Baines says he is unlikely to be England’s first-choice left-back at next summer’s European Championship.

The former Wigan defender has a mammoth task in displacing Ashley Cole in the Italian’s line-up as he has just six caps to his name compared to the Chelsea man’s 93.

Baines has been happy with his recent form, however, he knows that dislodging Cole in England’s starting XI is easier said than done.

“I’m not sure I’ll go into the Euros as first choice,” said Baines.

“My form was good last season and the season before but Ashley Cole is still the number one left-back.

“All I know is that it will be hard to dislodge him.”

Euro 2012 Will Be Tough For England

Euro 2012

England boss Fabio Capello believes that winning Euro 2012 will be even harder than winning the World Cup.

The Three Lions have sealed their position at the finals in Poland and Ukraine by going unbeaten in the 2011 campaign.

Capello and England may face matches against Spain, Portugal and France.

“I am concerned,” he said. “I hope by the end of the season the players will be fast and fresh, like at this moment. That will be really important.

“This has always been the problem for England. They are really tired at the end of the season.

“I hope it will not be the same because the next Euros will be really tough competition. The teams who finished first, second and third in the World Cup.

Euro 2012: Wayne Rooney England Decision Up In Air For Another Week

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney England Decision Up In Air For Another Week

The FA has revealed it must wait another week to learn the written reasons from Uefa for England striker Wayne Rooney’s three-match suspension.

Rooney was given the ban by Uefa after he was sent off with a red card during England’s 2-2 draw with Montenegro in their final Euro 2012 qualifier.

The red card was for kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic.

As it stands, the ban will rule the Manchester United forward out of the group phase of next summer’s European Championship in Poland and Ukraine.

That means Roo will miss the entire group stage next summer and the England coach, Fabio Capello, must decide whether to include him in his 23-man squad.

Jamie Redknapp made his viewpoint clear in a recent interview.

Jamie Redknapp says England should still take Wayne Rooney to Euro 2012 – even though he will miss the whole of the group stage.

However, former international midfielder Redknapp says there’s no doubt he should be included because he could still have a huge impact if England reach the quarter-finals.

“You’ve got to take him,” he said.

“You’ve got enough players there. I’ve heard people saying don’t take him, but you’ve got to have Wayne Rooney in the squad.

“He’s our world-class footballer. What are you going to do? Teach him a lesson? I don’t see it like that, you need Wayne Rooney there.

“It’s a shame because you want to see him out there because he’s our catalyst, our talisman and he’s the one person that can do something different.

“That’s football unfortunately. If you make mistakes, that’s what’s going to happen to you. You can’t expect leniency when you’ve committed the crime. You have to accept the consequences.”

A decision on whether to appeal the sanction is on hold while the FA awaits the written reasons for Uefa’s punishment.

However, the FA has confirmed that it is yet to receive the reasons from Uefa and will likely have to wait until some time in November to find out.

“The FA has today been advised by Uefa that we may not be provided with the written reasons regarding Wayne Rooney’s three-match suspension for another week at a minimum.

“Once the reasons are received, the FA will determine on any appeal after discussions with Fabio Capello and Wayne Rooney.”

If the FA decides against an appeal, or fails to reduce Rooney’s suspension, then England coach Fabio Capello has a key decision to make regarding the player’s inclusion in his 23-man squad for the tournament.

Euro 2012: Wayne Rooney Given 3-Match Ban

Wayne Rooney, England

England striker, Wayne Rooney was given a three-match ban that means he will miss all of England’s group games at the tournament.

Rooney will be out for all three group matches at Euro 2012 next summer after he was sent off for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic during England’s 2-2 draw with Montenegro.

Manchester United forward, Rooney, wrote a mitigation letter to Uefa asking for leniency – but to no avail.

The FA said in advance that it would appeal against any ban that Rooney received. Referee Wolfgang Stark praised Rooney for showing no dissent after his dismissal and the FA hoped Uefa would see the offence as resulting from frustration rather than malice.

“The striker will now be suspended from playing in his country’s next three Uefa national competition matches for which he would be eligible,” Uefa said in a statement.

Rooney is expected to appeal before England find out their Euro 2012 group opponents on 2 December at the draw in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Euro 2012: Rooney Awaits Fate

Wayne Rooney Faces Three-Five Match UEFA Euro 2012 Ban for Violent Conduct

England striker, Wayne Rooney, is waiting to learn of his fate, after receiving a red card for violent conduct by referee Wolfgang Stark for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic.

Rooney’s best hope reportedly is a two-match ban by the UEFA. Serious assaults warrant a five-match ban.

UEFA will rule tomorrow on the England striker’s suspension for his red card against Montenegro.

Rooney could miss all of England’s three group matches in the Euro 2012 finals next summer.

Rooney has not been sent off in any European competition for six years so it is likely the FA would appeal were he to be given a three-game suspension.

The European body’s disciplinary regulations article 10(e) state the “suspension for three competition matches or for a specified period for assaulting another player or other person present at the match”.

Euro 2012 – England Qualify With 2-2 Draw v Montenegro

England Qualify With 2-2 Draw v Montenegro

Top Premier League goalscorer, Wayne Rooney, plays for the England National Team – and has been a key player in getting England qualified for the Euro 2012 playoffs.

However Rooney may not be on the England squad for the playoffs.

England boss, Fabio Capello, stated that Rooney made a “silly mistake” that will keep him out at the start of next summer’s European Championship in Poland and Ukraine.

Rooney’s red card and dismissal for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic 17 minutes from time will cause an automatic one‑match ban.

And UEFA has the option to extend that by a further game.

“It’s a red card and you can’t defend it,” said Capello.

“I’m not happy, absolutely. I spoke with him and he admitted he’d made a silly mistake and said: ‘Yes, I’m sorry.’ More than that, what can I do? He’s a really important player with a lot of experience, and he’s played really important games before. But he’s made a silly mistake. I’ve seen players like him do that.

“You can’t understand why. I can’t enter into the head of Wayne Rooney when he plays. I can speak to him before the game, and I can substitute him. I can find different solutions. But you cannot understand the reaction of the players during the game, why things happen. Not just Rooney. Here he was not happy because he had missed some control and passes. His reaction was to kick his opponent.”

The build-up to the game had been marred by the arrest of Rooney’s father, Wayne Sr, and eight other people over suspicious betting patterns surrounding the dismissal of Motherwell’s Steve Jennings in a match against Hearts last December. Rooney was apparently “calm and relaxed” before this fixture, though the Montenegro manager, Branko Brnovic, admitted some surprise that the 25-year-old had been selected.

“I read in the newspapers that Rooney has some family problems in England,” said Brnovic, whose side secured a play-off place at Switzerland’s expense with this draw. “To be honest, I didn’t expect him to play because those things are serious and it’s not easy to concentrate on the game. They’re serious, and maybe that’s why he did what he did.”

Rooney and David Beckham are the only England players to be dismissed twice in their country’s colours.

“Wayne is gutted,” said the England goalkeeper Joe Hart. “It was so petty. I saw Danny Welbeck take one in the jaw about five minutes later [in a clash with the home side's substitute Milan Jovanovic], and I was thinking: ‘What’s happened there? Why isn’t that a red card?’ But we showed true and grit and determination, and I’m so proud to be a part of this England team.”

“We will find a solution to play without him,” said Capello. “We will try something in the next friendly games to prepare for the future.”

“We are first in the table and our goal was always to qualify,” added Capello. “This has been a good experience for us. The players better understand they need to be focused for 90 minutes, not just for 35. I hope we have learned a good lesson for the future.”
