Euro 2012 Update: Scholes May Play For England

Paul Scholes, Man Utd and England

Euro 2012 Update

Paul Scholes is feeling fit and reportedly is considering playing for England in Euro 2012.

Scholes came out of retirement to play for Manchester United after recently “retiring” to coach for Man Utd after Sir Alex Ferguson decided there were ‘no negatives’ to bringing in somebody with such a proven record.

Scholes has not played for England since 2004.

When Capello picked his squad for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa he asked Scholes to join the squad, and reportedly he may be contacted ahead of this summer’s European Championship.

“I like being at home, but I was tempted,” said Scholes.

“Every hour I changed my mind. But in the end the thought of being away for six weeks made up my mind. I just don’t enjoy being away from home for long periods.

“That was why I stopped in the first place, after the Euro 2004 finals. Plus the fact that I didn’t feel I was playing very well.

“People said it was because I didn’t like being played on the left, but that wasn’t the case. I’d played on the left for United and scored a lot of goals one season from there.”

When asked if he will play in Euro 2012, he replied. “Who knows?”

“After two months’ training with the youth team I felt I could still play,” said Scholes.

“I ended up playing in some practice games and was getting fitter and fitter, so I went to see the manager.

“How did I feel? Scared. I wasn’t sure what sort of reaction I would get. I told the boss I wanted to play again, not necessarily for United – just play again.

Alexandre Pato, AC Milan

Milan striker, Alexandre Pato is hoping to recover from a thigh injury in order to play for the first leg of AC Milan’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Arsenal FC on 15 February. The return leg of the Arsenal game will be played in London on 6 March.

Pato is a doubt for the San Siro leg of AC Milan’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Arsenal FC after being laid off for over three weeks.

The 22-year-old Brazilian strained his left thigh after scoring the extra-time winner in his side’s Coppa Italia round of 16 game against Novara Calcio.

Pato scored twice in three group stage matches this season.

The groups in the preliminary round of Euro 2012 are completed.

The format used by the EHF starts out with 16 teams and one of the two purposes of the group play is ‘simply’ to reduce the field down to 12.

Europe has about 10-12 really strong teams, so the weeding out of the more marginal teams does not often create much excitement.

The teams which advance bring with them the points from the games that they have played against each other, this means that every game means a lot even when teams already know they will will and advance.

Euro Stars Out of London Olympics – Euro 2012 Tickets

Wayne Rooney, England and Manchester United

Euro Stars Out of Olympics

England players who take part in this summer’s Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine will not be selected to play for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics.

Great Britain’s Olympic football team will be denied England’s best players after Stuart Pearce announced that no one involved in Euro 2012 will be considered for selection for the London 2012 Games.

Both Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshere have been among the Englishmen to have expressed an interest in appearing at the Olympics.

Stuart Pearce, who had not initially ruled anyone out, described it as “a sensible football decision”.

Pearce said: “We have had discussions as we come now to notifying the long list of the players who could potentially be selected and it is important to make clear what we have agreed regarding England players who will be at Euro 2012.

“We have agreed that any player who boards the plane to the European Championship in Ukraine and Poland will not be considered for selection to Team GB.

“It’s a sensible football decision when you consider the demands on players, and it now leaves no room for doubt for players and their clubs about next summer and the two major tournaments.”

Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger and Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson have said it would be too much for players to play in both tournaments.

Euro 2012 Update: Redknapp Considered As Capello Replacement

Harry Redknapp

Current Red Lions boss Fabio Capello steps down at the end of next summer’s 2012 European Championship.

Reportedly, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is one of the top contenders to be the next boss of the England National Team when Capello leaves. However Harry Redknapp is not interested in replacing Fabio Capello as England manager ‘at the present time’.

The Spurs are top-four challengers in the English Premier League and are playing in the UEFA Champions League under Redknapp as well.

Responding to a question regarding Redknapp’s future at the Spur’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, Tottenham Director Daniel Levy said: “Harry has 18 months left on his contract.

“We have had a conversation that says as far as Harry is concerned, he is very happy here and that he doesn’t particularly want to consider England at the present time.

“We will worry about that situation if it arises in the summer.”

Spurs are riding high in the Premier League table once again this season, with a run that brought 10 wins from 11 outings seeing them surge up the standings.

They did come unstuck away at Stoke in their last top-flight fixture, but Levy believes the club should still be setting their sights on the ultimate prize.

“I hope we have a great season and that we can finish in the top four or, who knows, maybe even higher.”

“We want first.”

Euro 2012 Update – England

Euro 2012 Update

Everton defender, Baines is a strong contender to be part of head coach Fabio Capello’s squad which travels to Poland and Ukraine, although competition to start is fierce. However, Leighton Baines says he is unlikely to be England’s first-choice left-back at next summer’s European Championship.

The former Wigan defender has a mammoth task in displacing Ashley Cole in the Italian’s line-up as he has just six caps to his name compared to the Chelsea man’s 93.

Baines has been happy with his recent form, however, he knows that dislodging Cole in England’s starting XI is easier said than done.

“I’m not sure I’ll go into the Euros as first choice,” said Baines.

“My form was good last season and the season before but Ashley Cole is still the number one left-back.

“All I know is that it will be hard to dislodge him.”

Euro 2012: Wales Manager Gary Speed Dies at 42

Gary Speed

Wales Manager Gary Speed Found Dead

Wales FA released the following statement: ‘We extend our sympathies and condolences to the family. We ask that everyone respects the family’s privacy at this very sad time.’

Wales National Team manager Gary Speed was found hanged on Sunday morning at his home in Cheshire. Police have confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.

A spokeswoman for Cheshire Police issued a statement.

‘At 7.08am today, Cheshire Police was informed of a sudden death at an address in Huntington, Chester.

‘Officers went to the scene where a 42-year-old man was found dead. The next of kin have been informed and have confirmed the identity of the man as Gary Speed.

‘There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. The family have requested that they are left in peace to grieve at this difficult time. A family tribute will be released at a later date but not today.’

Speed had been in charge of the Wales national team since December 2010, and had recently presided over a run of four wins in five internationals to climb to 50th in the world rankings.

Speed had previously served the Welsh national team with distinction as a player, winning 85 caps in a 14-year international career.

Speed had appeared happy and optimistic on BBC1′s Football Focus on Saturday, just hours earlier. He seemed enthusiastic about his team’s future and his hopes for success in World Cup qualifying matches next year.

After the news of Speed’s death, Premier League matches at Swansea and Liverpool went ahead with players wearing black armbands.

Those in shock and grief included Aston Villa keeper Shay Given who played with Speed at Newcastle. Kenny Dalglish withdrew grieving striker Craig Bellamy from his squad that faced Manchester City in the Premier League draw following the shock news.

Dalglish said: ‘There are more important things than playing a football match.’ ‘I know Gary Speed. He was a fantastic footballer but more importantly he was a decent fellow. ‘A lot of people are saddened by what has happened and the most important people, at this moment in time, is his wife and two boys. ‘Your heart goes out to them and they will need as much support as they can possibly get in the immediate future.

‘I am sure they will get that because he had a lot of good friends and because he was a good guy himself. It is disappointing for everybody.’

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini also paid his respects to Speed. ‘I am very sad for his family. It is a very bad day for his family. ‘I remember him as a player – he was a fantastic player.’

Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish said: ‘I’m shocked. My blood ran cold when I head the news. It’s very sad. ‘Three of our boys knew Gary very well. James Collins is a Wales international. Shay Given has known him for a while and Shay got the news first. ‘Jermaine Jenas played with Gary at Newcastle. These boys are all very upset. We would’ve understood if they had called the game off.’

Aston Villa keeper Shay Given, who played with Speed at Newcastle, was in tears.
He retired from playing in 2010.

Speed leaves a wife and two children.

Speed represented Wales 85 times as a player.

FAW Chief Executive, Jonathan Ford said: ‘I, and all of the football family of Wales, am devastated by the news of Gary’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family at this difficult time.’

‘In that short space of time he showed the talent he had for working with the players.

‘He had such a bright, fantastic future to look forward to in football but that is secondary, it’s about his family and his boys.’

FAW President, Phil Pritchard stated: ‘I am completely shocked by this terrible news and my thoughts are with his family. We will do whatever we can as an association to help them in this difficult time. All our thoughts are with his family and this sad time.’

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, now with Real Madrid, Tweeted: ‘RIP Gary Speed. My first PL game was against him, he showed me in that game what is British football about.’

The Football Association realeased a statement stating: ‘It is with great sadness that The FA has learned of the passing of Gary Speed. The thoughts of everybody at The FA are with his family and friends at this time. Gary had many friends at The FA, who are truly saddened by this news.’

Euro 2012 Will Be Tough For England

Darren Bent and Wayne Rooney, England

Euro 2012

England boss Fabio Capello believes that winning Euro 2012 will be even harder than winning the World Cup.

The Three Lions have sealed their position at the finals in Poland and Ukraine by going unbeaten in the 2011 campaign.

Capello and England may face matches against Spain, Portugal and France.

“I am concerned,” he said. “I hope by the end of the season the players will be fast and fresh, like at this moment. That will be really important.

“This has always been the problem for England. They are really tired at the end of the season.

“I hope it will not be the same because the next Euros will be really tough competition. The teams who finished first, second and third in the World Cup.
